The California State University Board of Trustees adopts a resolution on July 15 supporting acquisition of the Fort Ord site for a full-service residential campus "to serve the region and the state," and endorses continued planning for the project.

The people of Seaside and Marina watch this planning with particular interest. They sincerely believe that Fort Ord's closure and the subsequent economic blow to the area-as well as its spiritual and emotional impact-may turn the cities into ghost towns. Something needs to take Fort Ord's place and fast. A university will have to work, or-in the face of the already shaky state and national economy-the Monterey Peninsula may absorb a loss from which it will never recover.
