Hank Hendrickson, Executive Dean of CSUMB, is finally able to record the deed at the Monterey County Recorders Office in Salinas on August 29. This officially recognizes California State University as the legal owner of the property, and work on the buildings can begin.

The first staff members move to the new campus site the next day to begin the conversion/renovation process.

Renovation begins immediately on five buildings to be used as temporary offices for staff and faculty. The architectural design of Phase I facilities (21 buildings) begins.

California State University is now landlord to the remaining Department of Defense personnel (many of whom resent the new campus presence) and responsible for security of the campus and housing areas.
